A Lifetime of Inspiration

Della Works stands as a beacon of vitality, resilience, and community spirit within the Wyoming Senior Olympics. For over three decades, she has embodied the essence of active aging, participating in both winter and summer events, and serving as a passionate advocate for senior athletics.

A Lifelong Commitment to Senior Athletics
Della's journey with the Wyoming Senior Olympics began more than 30 years ago, and she has since become a cornerstone of the organization. Her involvement spans beyond participation; she has dedicated countless hours to organizing events, including serving as president, and has been instrumental in fostering a welcoming environment for athletes across the state. From Pinedale to Jackson, Cheyenne, Sheridan, Laramie, and Gillette, Della's presence has been a constant source of encouragement and enthusiasm. Her signature two-handed fist pump and her "14 grandkids" tank top have become symbols of her unwavering spirit and commitment to the games.

A Life Rich in Service and Adventure

Della's contributions extend far beyond athletics. Upon moving to Casper in 1963 with her husband Larry and their three daughters, she immersed herself in community service. She volunteered in home economics, welcomed newcomers to the community, and played a pivotal role in organizing dog sled races for the American Heart Association. As the founder of LIFE (Living In Furthering Evangelism), she brought Christian music groups to Casper, and she has been an active member of the First United Methodist Church, PEO, Geowives, and Red Hatters. Her distinctive white Chevy convertible, later replaced by a red PT Cruiser, often seen with the top down regardless of the season and accompanied by festive characters like the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus, reflects her joyful and inclusive nature.

A Global Athlete With A Heart of Gold

Della's athletic pursuits are nothing short of extraordinary. Encouraged by her son Robert, she began running at the age of 49. Tragically, Robert passed away in a plane crash shortly after, and Della continued to run in his memory, carrying his spirit with her in every race. She has completed over 20 marathons, including those on the Great Wall of China, in Antarctica, and the 100th Anniversary Olympic Marathon in Athens, Greece . Her participation in the National Senior Games is a testament to her dedication, having competed in 14 national events and carrying the Wyoming state flag during the Celebration of Athletes on two occasions .

A Legacy of Love and Family
Beyond her athletic achievements, Della has been a devoted mother to five children, grandmother to 14, and great-grandmother to seven. She has created lasting memories by traveling with each grandchild to destinations of their choice, including India, Australia, Egypt, New Zealand, and Greenland. Her home, built to offer panoramic views of Casper Mountain, has been a sanctuary for family and friends, embodying her philosophy that "there's always room for one more at the table."

A Living Legend
Della Works is more than an athlete; she is a living legend whose life exemplifies the values of the Wyoming Senior Olympics: health, wellness, and community. Her journey from a farm girl in Wisconsin to a world-traveling marathoner and beloved community figure is a testament to the power of perseverance, love, and an unwavering commitment to living life to its fullest.

As she continues to inspire those around her, Della remains a shining example that age is just a number, and the pursuit of passion and purpose knows no bounds.
